Saxapahaw Prison Books was founded in Saxapahaw, North Carolina, in May 2020 as the confluence of a global pandemic and police violence both shut us in our homes and drew us to the streets. Since then, the program has relocated to Brooklyn, where we continue to serve people incarcerated in Georgia, which has one of the most restrictive prison censorship policies in the U.S.
We send free books to people incarcerated in Georgia.
Read letters written by incarcerated readers
Reading requests from people inside is a bridge across the isolation incarceration imposes. Written, paper mail is one of the only ways most people inside can communicate with non-incarcerated people.
Select books that match their reading interests
If you are a reader yourself, you know there is little greater joy than sharing a favorite title with another person. Thanks to generous donations from
Mail the books
After selecting books, we package them and wait for mail from the intended recipient indicating that their prior approval has been completed. We then hurry to mail them before the approval lapses. 90% of donated funds go to mailing costs.
